Quick 4-Step Nighttime Skincare Routine

Make washing up before bed your new habit.

Just like you wouldn't go to sleep with toothpaste still in your mouth, or shampoo still in your hair, you should never go to sleep with makeup still on your face.

A good nighttime skincare routine is key to good skin. We’ve all seen the studies about why sleep is so important — a full eight hours keeps our bodies and brains more fit, happy, and focused. The effects of sleep on our skin are oddly similar to its effects on our bodies. If you go to sleep with old products still seeping into your skin, then you are preventing your skin cells from doing their job.

Here’s how your nighttime skin rejuvenation works: While we lay sleeping, our cells go into overdrive to help repair the damage incurred throughout the day.

Our blood vessels dilate, allowing an increased flow of nutrients and oxygen to the skin, which helps stimulate the removal of toxic cellular products. Research shows that our cells even regenerate faster while we’re sleeping. But how can your skin possibly drink all the goods if it's still full of grime? This is where cleaning your skin before bed comes in handy.

Follow these 4 simple steps to ensure you are going to sleep with clean, happy and hydrated skin, and wake up with a clearer complexion.

1. Cleanser & Makeup Remover

Whether in the shower or at the sink, lather up your clean hands with your favorite face cleanser and lightly smooth over your face in circular motions. DO NOT RUB! Rubbing and tugging of any kind on your skin is a NO NO. You will hear me say it over and over again.

No suds? No problem. Your cleanser is still doing the trick.

Splash off the cleanser and repeat the motion if needed.

To dry- PAT your face with a soft clean towel or paper towel. DO NOT RUB OR TUG! Bad rubbing. Bad!

  • If you need some extra help getting off your eye makeup, do so before you cleanse so that you clean off the makeup remover. Use your favorite makeup remover and ever so lightly hold down on the tricky areas to remove. Try not to rub. The more you rub, the angrier you make your skin. Soak up a cotton ball or cotton swab with the remover and simply press it and swipe off. I like to use Garnier Micellar Water.

  • I sometimes like to use an oil cleanser for a first cleanse to take off all face makeup. Oil attracts oil, so using an oil cleanser ensures that I am removing all the makeup and buildup of oil from my skin. Two of my favorite oil cleansers are the Farmacy Green Clean Cleansing Balm, and the Josie Maran Argan Cleansing Oil. Use these both on dry skin as a first cleanse to lift the makeup off your skin and prep and purify your pores.

2. Toners and Face Mists

After washing the days soot off of your face and removing your makeup, you will want to prep your skin and pores for all the great ingredients packed in your serums and moisturizers.

Using a toner or a botanical face mist is like using a primer for your skincare. This will help ensure that your skin is balanced and ready to absorb the moisturizing agents to come. Read up more on my thoughts on toners here!

3. Lotions and Potions

Once the toner dries it is time for your skin to drink.

Your pores have just been stripped and now it wants the good stuff back!

Take your favorite moisturizer and tap it into your face like you would tap a desk when you're bored. Smooth it over gently. Don't forget to bring it down to your chin, neck, and decolletage.

4. Eye Cream

It's never too early to start using eye cream. I learned this from my mother who does not have one wrinkle near her eyes! Some eyes are more sensitive to certain creams, so test out the waters before you buy any random one.

To apply:

Take your middle finger, which has the lightest touch, and very gently tap it around your eye; below, above, and next to. No need to rub it in, no need to massage it, just tap it around and let it soak in. You will feel the difference in hydration immediately.
