No Makeup, Makeup: 3 Do's and Don'ts

My favorite type of makeup is the type you can't see.

If you're reading this blog its' because, like me, you like to look and feel your best natural self. My favorite thing about makeup is, when used properly, its ability to enhance our beautiful natural features. But if used improperly, it can become clown-like fast.

So how to?

Follow these Do's and Dont's to get your most natural look, and ensure you are using your favorite makeup products properly!

1. EYELINER:

Don't put eyeliner only on your lower eyelid if you aren't putting any on top. This will drop a harsh shadow on your eye.

If you're like me, you probably hopped on the eyeliner wagon at age 13 when it was cool to add a harsh black line to your eye water-line.

(quick fun fact: the water-line is inside of your eye which is apparently called the Meibomian glands, which keeps the eye moist. The Meibomian glands that are interspersed along the lash line on both the upper and lower lid secrete an oily film that coats this tissue, keeping your eyes lubricated and the eyeball moving smoothly and comfortably within your eye socket.)

Do take a very thin eyeliner brush, or use your eyeliner pencil and press lightly into the outermost corner of your top eye lid lash line for an eye-opening effect.

Pro Tip: you can use any dark eye shadow to achieve this look!

*this tip is meant for natural looking eyeliner. If you are going for a dramatic smoky eye look-go ahead and pack it on, and then smudge that stuff all around!

2. FOUNDATION:

Don't use a foundation that is darker than your actual skin tone. Yes, we all want a sun-kissed look, but it won't look like the sun kissed you if you have a face full of foundation that doesn't actually match your skin.

Also, the foundation you used four or five years ago when you were first figuring out how to put the stuff on may not be the best one to continue using.

Do use a foundation that matches your neck and jaw line and cheek bones and is less than 2 years old.

Even if you have lots of the makeup left in the bottle - if its more than 2 years old its likely not so healthy to keep using on your skin every day. Additionally, our skin tones change often, so check that the one your using disappears when applied to your neck. That means it is the right shade!

My favorite way to check if your foundation fits naturally on your face - the car mirror.

Take a few seconds before you go anywhere and decide if the color you're wearing is really invisible on your skin. If you can see it- most likely others can too. And that makes it all the less natural.

Sometimes mixing 2 different tones will get you the best all-around match for your specific skin!

Do change up the brand you use every so often. You may have loved your Bobbi Brown face powder when you were 20, but as you age your skin does too!

Do

Make sure the type of foundation you are using works well with your skin type.

Powder foundations are great for oilier skin, while liquid foundations are great for drier skin. But then again - there are TONS of types of each. So get sampling, and find what works best for your current skin type. You may discover a new favorite brand!

Next time you pass a makeup store ask them to do a few swatches on your jaw line with different brands.

Don't test your foundation on your hand!

This is a myth ladies. If you're like me and you shade your face from the sun but your hands are exposed, you likely have a different skin tone on your hands than your neck and face.

Your hands also have a different skin consistency than your face, so the makeup absorbs much differently there. Next time you want to try a new color, ask for the sample to try at home, or put it on with a clean cotton swab in the store.

3. BRONZER & BLUSH:

Like I said, we all love a good sun kissed tan, but using makeup to make it look natural comes with a few rules.

Don't apply bronzer all over your face if you want to look natural! Bronzer is key to a natural makeup look, but only if applied in the right places.

Think of how your face looks after your first day back at the beach after a long sunless winter. The sun hits you on the areas that are higher up on your face:

Do dust the top of your forehead, cheekbones, tip of your nose, and a tiny bit on the bottom of your chin and jaw line.

The trick is to apply a small amount around your hair line, from there line the side of your cheek light enough to make a shadow in a backwards 3 formation down your chin.

As for the blush:

Don't apply one harsh line or one harsh circle on your cheeks. No no.

Do blend! Use your blush lightly blend the pink peach hue on the high points of your cheeks - the round puff that develops with your smile. You want to bring just a bit of color to that area and blend with your bronzer. Too much and you've got yourself a clown face.

ytime in 5 minutes!
